Today’s stone love. On Thursday we had a snow day and a welcome day off of work. It has been dry and warm here for most of the winter and this was the first significant snow fall of the season. Made for some nice pictures. I like how our three garden sentinels looked in the snow.

Today’s stone love. Gearing up for our next project. This will be a gateway to a large deck used for yoga and other events. It will be part of a larger entrance way with benches, an altar and small patio and steps. It will be built in a beautiful location, in a grove of aspen trees.

So far we are just making templates to get the feel of the scope of the gate and how it relates to a human. No matter what we have as an idea in our heads, the reality of placing 2500 lb stones in a space is always different. We take this time to tune in to how our bodies feel in a space and what the presence of a stone tells us. This type of deep listening is an integral part of the design process.

Today’s stone love. We spent part of last week making stone benches for an upcoming project at @elkstonefarm this spring. Making benches from four large sandstone blocks is simple, but has a lot of facets in the decision making process.

There are considerations of height, weight, depth and width to begin with. Then there is the skill in joining the blocks together to make two, seamlessly joined 10’ benches from 4 blocks. The gesture of each individual stone is important to consider, and then the overall shape of the two stones when they become one element in the landscape. Finally, the relationship of the stones to where they will be placed has to be thought about. These will find their resting place next to a large deck when we finally install them in a few months.

We’ll be making a large, stone gate for this project, and are looking forward to the stones arriving from the quarry.

Today’s stone love. Looking back to over 3 years ago when we built our cosmic egg underground meditation chamber. To this day it’s still our favorite project. Thanks to the lovely Lindsay Wolf @capaciousarts for modeling and to the talented Jesse Borrell @jrb_visuals for taking so many beautiful photos (like this one) and making a video for us.

Today’s stone love. This year had many beautiful moments and some times of struggle, too. As I sit here now, my heart is full with the moments of love that fed me in the deepest ways. Here are a few appreciations of the year, in no particular order.

Today’s stone love. My daughter pointed to this stone yesterday and asked “what’s that?”, in her little two year old voice. It’s a question she asks many, many, times a day. I love her curiosity and how new the world is to her. I love how she emits a long WOOOOOOWWWW when she sees something interesting. Her enthusiasm for life, and for taking things apart, seems unquenchable.
.
Approaching life with this level of raw innocence is something I aspire to, but can’t say I’ve experienced fully in recent memory. Every time I work a stone I try and invoke the beauty of being in the state of open curiosity and wonder, and surrender to where it takes me. Mostly it takes me right here, to this awe inspiring present moment.
.
In answer to her question, “what’s that?”, I thought about the myriad of ways I could answer. After a minute, I said “it’s a stone”. She said “YEAH!”, and then we went to play on the swing-set.

Today’s stone love. Dry-laid retaining wall we finished in October. This river-tumbled stone was round and dirty but revealed jewel-like interiors when we split them open. It’s a far cry from the usual flat bedded sandstone we work with and much less fussy to build with. We had fun on this one, working in a beautiful location for people who really appreciate our craft. It makes all the difference.

Today’s stone love. Sometimes death seems to be looking you straight in the face. The reality of this world is constant transformation, the only thing we can rely on is change.

Lately I’ve been feeling as though an old aspect of who I am is dying off. What is emerging is unknown, and comes in bursts and waves, flooding my being with new light. These moments wash away the chaotic desperation of the old ways, and move me to open to the possibility of what is ahead.
